Who can apply for sub-specialty recognition?
- Paediatricians who are on the GMC Specialist Register may apply to have a paediatric sub-specialty be added to their Register entry.
- This route is possible only for trainees who have completed a training programme for a sub-specialty qualification outside the UK.
- Inside the UK, the only recognised training programme is paediatric specialty training. Only trainees prospectively approved for sub-specialty training may have this training qualification listed on the Specialist Register. Application for sub-specialty for UK trainees is part of the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) process.
What sub-specialty training is acceptable?
- Overseas training must be documented by evidence that it can be considered equivalent to an approved UK sub-specialty training programme.
- The GMC decides on what overseas training is eligible for a sub-specialty recognition application.
- Applicants must submit evidence of their training, including their enrolment, completion of the programme, a copy of the curriculum or syllabus and any relevant assessments or examinations showing their training outcomes.
- Applicants must show that their training was equivalent to the current UK sub-specialty training programme.
- Applications are evaluated solely on the basis of equivalence of the overseas training programme to the UK programme. Evidence from multiple training programmes, or a combination of training and non-training experience will not be considered.
Is there a fee?
- Applications for sub-specialty recognition based on overseas training will incur a fee charged by the GMC.
What is the application process?
- Applications are made through the GMC.
- The GMC will forward your application to the College for evaluation.
- Final decisions are made by the GMC, based on the College’s recommendation.
